Nobody should have to move out of their neighborhood to live in a better one.

Majora Carter has a motto and it’s to "Green the ghetto!" Majora Carter wants to make green the new black and sustainability sexy. Majora Carter is a real estate developer, urban revitalization strategy consultant, MacArthur Fellow and Peabody Award winning broadcaster. Majora Carter has a soft spot in her heart for the South Bronx. It’s where she was born and raised and continues to live today. Majora Carter’s quest for environmental and economic justice began with an abandoned puppy that she found back in 1998.

After being pulled by her dog into a weedy vacant lot full of trash, Carter discovered that in the midst of this abandoned land that she was staring at the banks of the Bronx River. Carter would go on to secure a $10,000 grant from a USDA Forest Service program to provide seed money for river access restoration projects. The idea to revitalize the South Bronx would blossom into Hunts Point Riverside Park and become the first waterfront park that the South Bronx had had in more than 60 years. Majora Carter was able to leverage the $10,000 seed grant more than 300 times, into a $3 million dollar park.

Majora Carter’s TED Talk was one of five to help launch the TED Talk website on June 27, 2006. In 2017, Marjora Carter opened the Boogie Down Grind, a Hip Hop themed specialty coffee & craft beer spot, and the first commercial “3rd Space” in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx since the mid-1980s.
