Meet America's Newest Chess Master, 10-Year-Old Tanitoluwa Adewumi

At just 10 years old, Tanitoluwa Adewumi has just became the country's newest national chess master. He is the 28th youngest person to become a chess master after increasing his chess rating to 2223.

Tanitoluwa has already won the New York State K-3 Championship at eight years old.

Adewumi’s latest accomplishment comes after only playing chess for three years. When he first began, he and his family were living in a homeless shelter in Manhattan "after fleeing religious persecution by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram in their home country of Nigeria."

UC Berkeley study finds empathy training reduces recidivism rates

A positive psychology intervention developed by UC Berkeley suggests that nonjudgmental empathy training helps court-appointed supervision officers feel more emotionally connected to their clients, which, the new study shows, might deter them from criminal backsliding.

The findings, published last month in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, show, on average, a 13% decrease in recidivism among the clients of parole and probation officers who participated in the empathy training experiment.
